Humanity made a long way from wooden hand pipes to glass bongs. But where the design and technique comes from? Historians claim that the first items made from glass were created in Mesopotamia around 2000 years BCE, people used it to create jewelry and accessories. Glassblowing techniques kept advancing up to 13th century when Italians discovered “millefiori” technique for creating unique patterns for beads and pottery.
The first bongs
The oldest bongs that have ever been found come from Ethiopian cave which was inhabited somewhere between 1100 and 1400 years BCE. The bongs were made of animal horns and primitive pottery, some of them were extended underground in order to create the cooling system. Allegedly ancient people used those for smoking mixes of dry herbs.
The Silk Road and Bongs in Central Asia
The first written records that prove the use of bong and grinders are dated back to the 16th century. The word itself comes from the Thai word “buang”, which refers to bamboo bongs that were common in Central Asia. It is theorized that the use of water in bongs was introduced in China and spread across the world by the silk road. Some Chinese regents were even found with bongs in their graves
Industry of bongs
The boom of bongs industry happened in 1960’s, it was started by Bob Snodgrass – the godfather of the movement who designed bongs all over the country while following a Grateful Dead tour. Snodgras settled in Eugene of Oregon state where after a while discovered the fuming - the process that uses gold and silver to color borosilicate glass. Soon he got a lot of students as a lot of people wanted to learn that skill. So the modern glass revival began with bongs at the forefront, and Snodgrass’s students multiplied.
By the late ‘90s, even Tommy Chong jumped on the bong boat as he began to brand and sell bongs of his own name. Smoke shops proliferated in New York and Los Angeles, and then spread across the country. The golden age finished when the US government organized a zealous campaign with a goal to ban bong sales, which they saw as drug belonging instrument. Over 50 retailers were shut down and most of the bongs got confiscated. At that time the industry was estimated to worth around $1 billion.
Right now bongs for sale are allowed in most of the countries. I am so excited to use RAW accessories daily. I am super intrigued to get my hands on the new RAW Low Key Backpack. It doesn’t have as many logos as common RAW product hence it does not scream “I smoke weed” shout out when you wear one.
